Finding that one-in-a-thousand

They say we're each unique, but it seems some of us are more unique than others.  Dating is difficult enough even for 'normal' people... but what if your interests, values, or beliefs are unusual or unmentionable?

Your perfect partner is not going to knock on your door, so you need to get out there and start looking.  Where would your potential date hang out?

Opera fans might meet at operas, car enthusiasts at car shows... but where could a vegan, someone with an IQ of 170, a homebody, or someone with your idea of a perfect body be found?  What if your perfect partner lives far away?

This is where niche dating sites come in.  They exist for people who are plus-sized, Christian, senior citizens, tall, or any other group for whom finding a date can seem like finding a needle in a haystack.  However, with so many niche dating sites available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one.

1) Determine your niche

The first step in finding a niche dating site is to determine what makes your future partner so rare and elusive.

Think about the things that are important to you, such as religion, politics, culture, a hobby, or some physical/sexual preference.  Consider what kind of person you want to meet, and whether that person would also be interested in you.

Bear in mind that a 'niche' dating site usually caters to one niche only, so you need to choose your main focus.  You are unlikely to find a dating site specifically for tall, high-IQ violinists, so which is most important to you?

If your niche is 'one that can't be mentioned', for example you are looking for pointy breasts, an uncut penis, or a bubble butt, you're flat out of luck on 99.9% of dating sites.  In this case, nude dating might be a solution for you.

2) Research different dating sites

Once you have identified some potential specialty dating sites, it's important to research them thoroughly.  Look at the site's features, membership options, and pricing.  Read reviews and testimonials from other users to get an idea of the site's user experience and success rate.

Consider the site's user base as well.  Are there enough members close to you?  Are there enough members who fit your criteria?  You may also want to check the site's policies on privacy, security, fake profile removal, and user verification.

3) Create a compelling profile

Once you have chosen a dating site, it's time to create an attention-grabbing profile that will attract the right kind of person.  Be honest and authentic in your profile, and highlight your interests, values, and goals.

Use clear and engaging language, and avoid clichés, generic statements, and sleep-inducing TL;DR.  Try to sound different, confident, and inject humor where appropriate.  Don't come off as a 'jerk' by making demands or using inappropriate language.  Use a spell checker!

Upload photos that stand out from the crowd, showcase your personality and interests, and are not overly-edited or misleading.  Remember, there are thousands of other photos competing for your perfect date's attention!

If your body is one of your main selling points – and for many it is – most dating sites will be of no use to you since they do not allow nude or raunchy photos.  (However, we do!)

4) Be proactive, respectful, and original

Even on niche dating sites, finding a good match requires effort and patience.  Be proactive in your search by browsing profiles and being the first to make contact.

Be respectful and courteous in your interactions with other users, and avoid sending generic or copy-paste messages.  Instead, take the time to read a person's profile and craft a thoughtful and personalized message that shows you are genuinely interested in getting to know them.

Oh, and guys, sending unasked-for dick pics is a great way to make a woman lose interest and block you!

5) Stay safe

Last, but not least, is ensuring your safety – especially if you're a woman.  Be cautious about sharing personal information, such as your full name, address, or phone number.  Use the site's messaging system to communicate with other users until you feel comfortable sharing more personal information.

Your first meeting should be in a public space, with a companion if necessary for added security and/or to avoid being pressured for sex on the first date.

Be wary of scams or fraudulent activity, and report any suspicious behavior to the site's support team.  Use strong and unique passwords for your account.

Happy dating!
